Police have addressed rumours of a New Year’s Eve firework display taking place in the centre of Birmingham – and issued a warning to those heading there. Despite speculation, West Midlands Police stressed a display will not be happening in Centenary Square tonight as people welcome 2025.
The force shared confirmation “this is not the case” on its social media to avoid disappointment for anyone travelling into the heart of the city for the celebrations today, December 31. Police said: “We don’t want people travelling unnecessarily” as they warned the event is not taking place.
There is no planned event this year. A large police presence will be visible in the centre to ensure the New Year celebrations go smoothly at the bars, restaurants and clubs.

Birmingham Superintendent Emlyn Richards said: “There are rumours online that a fireworks display will take place in Centenary Square but there isn’t a planned event this year. We don’t want people travelling into the city to be disappointed when they arrive and discover this is the case.
“There will be thousands of people travelling into the city to enjoy themselves at venues across the city. We will be visible on the streets tonight to ensure everything runs smoothly and people have a wonderful evening.”
The force said it will be working alongside partners including Birmingham City Council to “ensure everyone has a good time this evening.”
West Midlands Police added: “That’s why we’re working hard to make sure everyone feels safe and secure. Officers will be visible in the city tonight to engage with the public and ensure everyone has a great evening. Working alongside our partners we will use CCTV cameras to keep an eye on public spaces and spot any potential problems.
“Our Licensing teams are working closely with bars, clubs and pubs to make sure they’re doing everything they can to keep you safe, like promoting responsible drinking. We run campaigns to educate people about personal safety the dangers of drugs and how to drink responsibly.”
