Ambulance service warning ahead of 15-hour Met Office weather alert

The ambulance service has issued a warning ahead of the looming wind alert that covers the South West. The Met Office yellow warning is in place from 12.15am until 3pm tomorrow (Wednesday, January 1).

The South Western Ambulance Service is urging motorists to avoid driving through floodwater. It is also asking people to look out for vulnerable people across the region.

The Met Office has warned that periods of strong winds could lead to disruption across the West Country during the warning. Gusts are set to hit up to 75mph in some areas of the region.

The forecaster said: “Strong southwesterly winds are expected overnight and during Wednesday. The strongest winds are expected across coastal regions in the west and south of the warning area, where gusts of 65-75 mph are possible.

“Inland, highest gusts will typically be between 45 and 55 mph, but possibly 60 mph in places, particularly in association with the passage of squally cold front which will bring a band of heavy rain southwards. The wind is expected to ease quickly from the north through the course of the day as this cold front passes.”
