EastEnders viewers are bracing themselves for a potentially heart-wrenching storyline as Nigel Bates, portrayed by Paul Bradley, showed signs of forgetfulness in the New Year’s Eve episode on BBC One.
Reconnecting with his old pal Phil Mitchell (played by Steve McFadden), Nigel wandered into Albert Square unexpectedly on Christmas Day and was promptly invited over to catch up on what he’s missed.
Nigel confessed to Phil: “Me and Julie split up a while back. Tried to sell the house but couldn’t. She found someone else and wanted me out”. In response, Phil asked: “Couldn’t Clare take you in?” before Nigel admitted: “Nah. We lost contact ages ago.”
When pressed on his current living situation, Nigel claimed to be homeless, spending nights in hostels when they’re available, reports the Manchester Evening News.

Yet, a twist unfolded when Phil headed to the kitchen and Nigel received a message from his wife Julie, revealing that they are, in fact, still together.
On Tuesday, things took another confusing turn when Nigel mistakenly called Phil by his brother Grant’s name, which Phil found amusing. A further mix-up ensued with a dinner mishap resulting in Nigel uncomfortably eating a spicy curry intended for Phil.
Speculation is rife amongst viewers that dementia may be plaguing Nigel, leading to these forgetful episodes.
A concerned fan shared their theory on Facebook: “Not sure what long term storyline has been given to Nigel, but with him calling Phil Grant and him doing a lot of reminiscing, it suggests to me he might have dementia. It could explain why he ran out on Julie. Just a hunch.”

One fan agreed: “I was thinking that when he called him Grant”, while another viewer shared the same sentiment: “I thought that too after tonight’s episode.”
A fellow fan chimed in: “Definitely thought this too”. On X, a fan speculated: “So do we think Nigel may have dementia? # EastEnders.”
Another viewer expressed concern: “#EastEnders I hope they’re not going to do a dementia storyline for Nigel”.
