The Lake District, renowned for its stunning landscapes, attracts nearly 16 million visitors annually, regardless of the weather.
While there are numerous breathtaking routes stretching from Scotland to the Peak District, a survey of 1,500 motorists revealed the nation’s favourite trail. Winning the top spot by 22 percent of the votes, according to Windrush Car Storage, is the 29.8-mile drive from Kendal to Keswick in the Lake District.
The site commends the route: “This enchanting stretch flows through the Lake District, flanked by Lakeland fells and skirting the banks of shimmering Lake Windermere.”

It adds: “To drive it once is to be smitten for life, and you’ll be in good company – both William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge took inspiration for their poetry from this unforgettable landscape.”
Covering just under 30 miles along the A591, the route offers expansive views in just 56 minutes one way. Starting in Kendal, the A-road takes you through the picturesque market town of Ambleside, with its array of shops, cafes, and restaurants lining the charming streets.
The journey continues past Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake, where boat trips or lakeside views can be enjoyed.

Further along the A591, you’ll encounter Grasmere, a village famous for its links to poet William Wordsworth, including his former residence, Dove Cottage.
Eventually, the road leads to the town of Keswick, nestled on Derwentwater’s northern edge, which boasts numerous attractions, including museums, art galleries, and a bustling market – and the lake provides ample opportunities for water sports.
For those up for a challenge, a trek from Keswick to Kendal is possible, though it does take around 10 hours and 38 minutes. It’s not for the faint-hearted, but it’s an excellent way to kickstart those New Year’s fitness resolutions.
For those looking to reduce their carbon footprint, Stagecoach’s 555 bus service offers a fantastic alternative. The 555 bus operates from Kendal to Keswick every hour, with regular stops including Windermere, Ambleside, and Grasmere.
