The Liverpool ECHO is saying a huge thank you to the people of the city and the wider region for the amazing efforts in raising the money needed to save Zoe’s Place baby hospice.

On October 7, the entire city was shaken as the ECHO reported the devastating news that Zoe’s Place, a much-loved hospice that offers support to very poorly babies, children and their families was set to close its doors for good. The hospice, based in Yew Tree Lane in West Derby, had been unable to raise the funds for a new centre and was out of options.

But the people of Liverpool had other ideas. As is so often the case, the city refused to go down without a fight and everyone pulled together to raise an almost unbelievable £5 million in just 30 days to save Zoe’s Place, meaning that the children and families who are supported at the hospice now know that the place they rely on and value so dearly has a future.

The ECHO was incredibly proud to be involved with this campaign and across an incredible month we reported on everything from children’s bake sales to hugely generous business donations. In total an enormous £7.5m was raised, which means the future of Zoe’s Place is secure heading into 2025.

This was a momentous achievement from the people of Liverpool and we wanted to say thank you. You may see some special messages of appreciation appearing around the city in the coming days. It is our way of saying thanks for an amazing effort from everyone.

Liverpool ECHO editor Maria Breslin said: “The prospect of raising such a huge amount of money to save Zoe’s Place seemed daunting at first. But you should never underestimate Liverpool nor the staggering generosity of its people.

“The Liverpool Echo was proud to play a part in this campaign and to highlight the very many fundraisers organised across our city region and beyond. From the Norris Green schoolboys who donated their ‘penny for the guy’ money to the huge £2.5m cash injection from Home Bargains, every bit made a difference.

“We live in a special city and the slogan ‘If anywhere could, Liverpool could’ summed up its spirit. The messages you’ll see across the city are a thank you to everyone involved and a reminder of what can be achieved when we stand and work together.”
