Simple four ingredient remedy could help ease symptoms of cough within minutes

As festivities wrap up and life returns to normal, it’s vital to remember that health should remain a priority.

The Christmas rush often means mingling and the inevitable spread of germs – for many, this results in a lingering cough once the celebrations end. If you’re suffering from a post-holiday cough, there’s no need to head to your GP, according to NHS advice.

Instead, focus on resting, hydrating well and keeping distance from others to prevent further transmission — though staying put can be challenging during the bustling holiday aftermath.

For those seeking a home remedy, social media may have the answer. The acclaimed health and wellness profile @healthy.organic.ways, followed by a substantial 726,000 users on Instagram, recently shared a quick relief.

The post begins: “This remedy might be just what you need. Today I’ll show you how to prepare a powerful natural solution that will provide relief in just minutes. You’ll need one orange cut off the top and remove the centre or pulp.”

It adds: “Oranges are excellent for soothing coughs as they reduce inflammation and disinfect the bronchial tubes. Once the pulp is removed, place the orange over a flame on your stove and add a pinch of salt.”

If you’re feeding this remedy to your children, it’s advised to use just a pinch of salt for toddlers between 2-5 years of age, while those over five, half a teaspoon can work a treat. The video adds: “Also add a pinch of turmeric powder and mix.

“Now heat the mixture until it darkens and starts to boil. Once it boils for a few seconds, it’s ready so let it cool for a minute then add a spoonful of honey then give it to your child in the morning and night for three days.”

The account states this “homemade orange-based recipe could be the solution you’ve been searching for”. It says oranges are known for their anti-inflammatory and disinfecting properties.

When the fruit is combined with a pinch of turmeric and honey, it can also “make a powerful remedy to soothe bronchial irritation”. It adds: “Not only does this mixture help calm a nagging cough, but it also provides immune-boosting benefits to your little one.”

Alternatively, the NHS advises the following to combat a cough:

  • Paracetamol or ibuprofen to treat any pain
  • Hot lemon and honey (not suitable for babies under one)
  • A herbal medicine called pelargonium (suitable for people aged 12 or over)

Meanwhile a pharmacist can help if you have a cough and advise you on the best syrup, medicine or sweets to take. If you have a persistent cough which hasn’t gone in weeks, you should visit your local GP for help.
