More than TWENTY flood warnings are in place across Lancashire this morning following a New Year’s Eve deluge as torrential rain continues to batter the region.
The Environment Agency has published 24 separate flood warnings covering the county and in these areas, flooding is ‘expected’ with residents advised to ‘act now’. Nine other flood alerts are also in place which means ‘flooding is possible’ and residents should ‘be prepared’.
It comes after the Met Office issued a fresh amber weather warning for rain with up to 100mm of rain expected in some areas. The downpours have resulted in several closures on major roads including the M65, Bilsborrow Lane in Inglewhite and Whalley Road in Sabden.
Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service said they have also attended ‘a number of incidents of flooding across the county’. They are urging people to ‘avoid travelling where possible’ and not to ‘not walk through a flooded area’.
The amber warning has been put in place across parts of North-West England until 9am on New Year’s Day. It states that heavy rain is “likely to lead to disruption including flooding in some locations” with a chance some places could see more than 10cm of rain.
