A 70-year legacy celebrated at Tiverton Women’s Institute

Tiverton and Bampton WI celebrated a remarkable milestone, honouring Jeanne Jones for an extraordinary 70 years of membership.

Jeanne Jones first joined West Buckland WI, Somerset Federation, in 1954. She still has her original membership card.

Jeanne was a shy new wife who eventually became their vice president, gaining confidence and support. Jeanne then joined Washfield WI, Devon Federation and when it closed moved to Tiverton and Bampton WI.

Liz Gowen, president of the Tiverton and Bampton WI said: “Jeanne reviewed her years in the WI and told us that she realised what a difference it had made to her life, belonging to an amazing organisation which had done so much for women since the days when life in the country would have been lonely and lacking in stimulation.

“She noted that the WI has evolved over the years but has never forgotten its original ideals, most important being the friendship and the feeling of being among people of similar needs. Jeanne reflected that she was just lucky to have had a long life and has thoroughly enjoyed her time in the WI.”

She was presented with a framed certificate, WI mug, and a cake by President Liz Gowen. Cherie Gubb, West Buckland WI, presented flowers to Jeanne on behalf of Somerset Federation WI.
