Most shoppers want to know they are spending as little as possible when at the supermarket. Prices and special discounts can be a big factor when choosing where to do the weekly shop.
But with loyalty cards and other offers it can be hard to keep track of which supermarkets are cheaper than others. Now a new study has named Aldi as the cheapest supermarket compared to rivals, even when the loyalty cards of other supermarkets are included.
Aldi topped the list for smaller shops, even though it doesn’t currently offer a discount card. A bigger shop experiment did not include Aldi due to its smaller product range. Tesco, with its Clubcard, came out cheapest in this study by Which?

“This analysis didn’t include Aldi or Lidl as they have smaller product ranges,” Which? said. “However, Tesco was cheaper nearly half the time after we began including loyalty discounts in our analysis in June 2024.”
The research showed loyalty cards will generally make the cost of shop cheaper but not always, in the case of a smaller Aldi shop, the Mirror reports. Lidl also beat the traditional ‘big’ supermarkets on a smaller shop without a discount scheme.

Dual pricing schemes have proved controversial but allow shoppers who sign up to them to secure discounts on certain produces. Evidence shows they are generally worth it for larger shops.
But someone not needing to do a particularly big shop may be better served going to Aldi or Lidl instead.
