Several schools have announced they will be closed on January 10 due to “unsafe” ice following snowfall earlier this week. The region woke up to a a layer of slippery ice on Thursday, January 9 as much of Merseyside was placed under a yellow weather warning for snow and ice.
This came after a rare amber warning was in place for much of last weekend after heavy snowfall and icy conditions. The adverse weather conditions caused disruption to travel, including on the roads, train services and flights.
A new weather warning was put in place at 4pm this afternoon and will remain in place until 10am tomorrow morning. Temperatures are set to drop considerably in the early hours of the morning when lows of -2C are expected to cause a frosty chill. The new warning means a rare seventh consecutive day of weather warnings for the region.
According to the Met Office, “icy stretches” are likely to form tonight. The website said: “Showers will fade this evening, leaving a dry night with light winds. Turning very cold under widely clear skies with a severe frost developing. Freezing fog patches are likely to form, with icy stretches in places. Minimum temperature -4 °C.”
The ice has caused several schools to take the decision to remain closed tomorrow due to the icy conditions causing school grounds and the surrounding areas to be “unsafe” for staff and pupils. Writing to parents, St Clare’s Catholic Primary School’s headteacher Mrs MacKenzie said that despite the best efforts of staff the site remains unsafe for pupils to return to school.
She said: “The weather conditions tomorrow are still at warning level and the temperatures are not expected to rise above 5. Please know this decision [to close] has not been made lightly.” Below is a list of schools that will be closed on January 10.
