‘Amazing’ Christmas tree hack turns your old fir into cleaning spray – and it’s so easy

If you’ve got the delight of a real Christmas tree gracing your home, you might be pondering what to do with it post-celebration. A TikTok user, @creative_explained, has shared a brilliant hack for repurposing your festive fir into a useful cleaning solution.

He captured his audience’s attention with a video titled: “You won’t believe what you can do with a Christmas tree”, and indeed, many were astonished in the comments section to learn that their ornament-adorned tree could double as a household cleaner. The simple DIY advice is as follows: “Cut a few branches off your Christmas tree, chop them up a little bit, grab an air-tight container, put the pine needles in it, and then fill it up with some white vinegar, close it, and let it soak like that for about three weeks.”

After this time, the mixture will develop a “nice golden colour”; at this point, you should get a spray bottle and “strain some of the liquid out into it.”

He explains the rationale behind this method, stating: “Pine needles are packed with anti-bacterial properties and in combination with the vinegar, it makes a super awesome disinfectant.”

You can spritz the DIY spray on “anything” around your house, leaving a “pleasant” smell. The creator advises using it on mirrors, toilets, floors, and worktops, reports the Mirror.

Astonishingly, considering you can pick up white vinegar from Tesco for just 35p, this presents a tremendously cost-effective and clever method to make your Christmas tree useful well into the new year. DIY Natural notes: “Pine is naturally antibacterial and smells great”, meaning it can be repurposed into soap or household cleaner.

Amidst the comments section, some mentioned their tree was “artificial” thus preventing them from trying it, but those with real trees shared positive feedback for the idea. One impressed commenter posted: “Saves the environment which is good and helpful”, while another praised: “So, a super cheap PineSol, AND without all those extra chemicals? ! ? ! Awesome idea! Thanks for sharing! “.
