Asda urged ‘please give us a timescale’ for re-opening after fire shut Llandudno Junction store

A councillor has called on a supermarket giant to give customers an approximate date when its fire-damaged store could be re-opened. Flames engulfed part of the branch in Conway Road, Llandudno Junction, in the early hours of December 17 last year.

Up to six crews descended on the building to check for occupants and extinguish the blaze. No-one was inside but extensive damage was caused in the incident.

More than three weeks after the inferno, an Asda spokesperson said this week: “We’re working hard to get the store back open as soon as possible for our customers and will let the community know when the Llandudno Junction store is set to open. In the meantime, our fabulous colleagues at our Llandudno Superstore are ready to serve customers and ensure that they continue to have access to great value products all at Asda Price.”

However, Cllr Priestley, who accepted there was a lot of work to be done to repair the store, urged the company to give customers a clearer idea about progress. He told North Wales Live: “I looked inside yesterday and it’s basically gutted. (But) customers and residents in the Llandudno Junction area are asking me how long I think it will be before it will re-open again. So there is some concern.

“Some of the customers are having to travel elsewhere and not everyone has a car. Some staff who don’t have cars are also going to have to rely on public transport to get to work in the other Asda in Llandudno. Obviously I’m delighted no-one was injured but there’s quite an inconvenience now we have lost Asda for the time being. We’ve got Iceland next door but there’s more of a range at the ‘Little Asda’.

“We won’t hold Asda to the exact date and hour but it would be good if they could share a ‘ball park’ timescale of when they will be open again.”
