BBC Antiques Road Trip expert Philip Serrell slapped by Yorkshire farmer

Antiques Road Trip expert Philip Serrell experienced a rather shocking event when a seller, clearly insulted by Philip’s negotiation tactics over a wooden table, gave him a resounding slap. During their journey scavenging for hidden gems across Yorkshire and Derbyshire.

In pursuit of a unique find, Phil humorously considered buying a horse but ended up unwittingly offending a farmer with a quip about needing a “translator” to understand his accent. Trying to clarify his comment, Phil said: “Do you know what? I often think I need a translator. You’ve done what? At me? That’s V? Right… okay? I want to tip it up.”

He then further disparaged the offering by criticising the farmer’s table, remarking: “Yeah, there you go. That’s an old top on four brand new legs. Things have potential in life. But it’s not worth a fat lot.”

The farmer, taken aback and unimpressed by Phil’s evaluation, stood his ground, retorting: “No? Get away man. It’s authentic! “.

Undeterred, Phil made his stand clear with: “Authentic? I’ll make you one bid for it and that’s it. You can have £20. Look at this! ” To which the indignant farmer hit back, saying: “Oh man. This could keep us warm for three days. Here, no messing about! Yes or no. £30 for it. I thought £50. That’s what I thought.”

Remaining firm, Philip countered with a final offer: “I’ll give you £25 for it and that’s the end of it. Shake my hand,” only to receive a stinging slap on the hand instead of a handshake, reports the Express.

In reaction to the unexpected physical reprimand, Philip exclaimed in surprise and pain: “No need for that! What did you do that for? ” while Tim Wonnacott, narrating the encounter, dryly observed: “He had his reasons.”

In August, Philip provided an update on his health following concerns raised during an episode of Bargain Hunt. He posted: “For those who enquired after today’s @BBCBargainHunt – the answer is I now have a new hip and am turbo-charged! ” After undergoing hip replacement surgery in 2023, Philip expressed his gratitude on X, saying: “Thank you to those that asked – nothing major but I am the proud owner of a new hip.”
