BBC Antiques Roadshow expert refuses to value war letter as he breaks down in tears

Viewers of the popular BBC programme Antiques Roadshow were left stunned during a repeated episode where none of the items presented received valuations from the experts.

The unique episode, filmed at Dover Castle in 2019 to commemorate 80 years since the beginning of World War II, deviated from the show’s usual format, leaving fans surprised.

Among the items showcased was a photo album owned by an Austrian soldier, which contained a previously unseen image of Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain’s notorious meeting with Adolf Hitler in 1938.

Another poignant moment involved a collection of letters shared by a guest, narrating the tragic tale of Audrey, a nine-year-old girl sent to Canada to escape the war.

Expert Bill Harriman read aloud a heart-wrenching letter dated 19th September 1940, informing Audrey’s parents of her death on the ship.

A visibly moved Harriman read: “And it says, ‘Dear Mr Mansfield, I am very distressed to inform you that in spite of all of the precautions taken by the ship carrying your child to Canada was torpedoed on Tuesday night September 17th.”

He continued, “I am afraid your child was not amongst those reported as rescued,” before adding: “What a sad, sad thing.”

Bill also broke down as he read out a letter from Audrey to her parents when she was in England. As he wiped away tears, he said: “That is truly heartwrenching. I don’t think I have seen anything like it before.”
