BBC Breakfast fans hit out at Naga Munchetty and Charlie over ‘harsh’ ticket debate

BBC Breakfast viewers felt compelled to castigate hosts Charlie Stayt and Naga Munchetty over an increasingly fraught debate regarding concert ticket prices.

During the show on Friday morning (January 10), while back on their iconic red sofa, they were joined by Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, Lisa Nandy, to discuss a new governmental measure that will put a cap on the prices of resold tickets for concerts, sporting events, and more.

Lisa contended: “I believe music belongs to fans and fans make the music industry what it is!” Naga, however, interjected to remark on the willingness of fans to splurge on high-priced tickets for live events.

The MP countered with the affordability issue, stating, “They want to buy tickets but they can’t buy tickets because I don’t know anyone in this country that can afford £1000 for a ticket.”

Naga promptly responded, undermining the point by asserting: “Well, there are lots of people who can afford £1,000 and will and who did!” This led to an evident shock from the MP, to which Naga matter-of-factly added: “There are! Because people bought them!”

“It’s a ridiculous amount of money, of course, but people were willing to pay for it, that’s the problem, so if they know there’s a market there, they’re going to carry on doing it.”

Charlie then queried whether the government was considering new legislation to tackle rapacious ticket resellers, reports the Express.

The exchange sparked debate among viewers, with some taking to platform X to voice their opinions, one stating: “Naga and Charlie unnecessarily harsh with Lisa Nandy on ticket pricing.”

Another commenter supported this sentiment, saying: “Why are Charlie and Naga giving Nandy a hard time for trying to stop ticket touts and predatory ticketing prices? It’s a good thing for Bob’s sake!”

A third added: “Naga seems ok with touts. I spent 6 hours trying to get Oasis tickets, not prepared to pay £1400 for two, but Naga would apparently and sees it as legitimate.”

Despite the criticism levelled at the presenters, some viewers sided with them, as evidenced by a comment that read: “Has she not got bigger problems to deal with in the UK apart from ticket touters.”

BBC Breakfast airs Mondays-Sundays from 6am on BBC One.
