BBC Breakfast’s Jon Kay sparks concern as host replaced by co-star at the last minute

BBC Breakfast experienced a change in its presenting line-up on Monday, as the usual host, Jon Kay, was absent.

Jon and Sally Nugent regularly present the morning news show from Monday to Wednesday, with Charlie Stayt and Naga Munchetty taking over from Thursday to Sunday.

However, viewers were greeted by Sally and Roger Johnson on Monday morning. Roger ordinarily steps in on weekends if neither Naga nor Charlie can present.

John Watson, who delivered the latest sports updates, and Carol Kirkwood, who provided the weather forecast, also joined them in the studio.

Audiences at home expressed their confusion about the unexpected switch-up, questioning why Roger was presenting instead of Jon. Viewers took to social media with comments like: “Damn! I thought it was Sunday for a minute..What’s Roger Local doing on Breakfast this morning?” reports the Express.

While another chimed in with light-hearted banter: “I’d rather have Roger than dad joke Jon.”

Jon and Roger did not publicly address the sudden alteration in presenters, but Roger responded to fans online.

Reflecting on a particular show segment, one viewer tweeted: “@RogerJ_01, your comment about the guy on the tube ‘just showing off’ tickled me summat rotten on a cold dark Monday morning @BBCBreakfast.”

To which Roger responded: “I was going to say something about him wearing socks – but thought that might be a bit too much! Have a good Monday.”

Another viewer highlighted Sally’s reaction with a tweet, saying: “@sallynugent’s reaction was priceless. ‘Did he just say that?'”

Last week, Jon grabbed the limelight after discussing an “awkward” incident on Celebrity Mastermind.

Jon was pitted against Beattie Edmonson, whose father, Adrian Edmonson, starred in Jon’s selected specialty topic, the quintessential 1980s sitcom The Young Ones.

As Jon settled down to field questions on the comedy series that featured Adrian, Beattie was gearing up with her selected specialty on the American rock group, The Strokes.

During his segment on general knowledge, Jon revealed to host Clive Myrie that he was inspired to choose The Young Ones after conducting an interview with Adrian Edmondson on Breakfast.

He shared with Myrie, “Little did I know you put me next to Young Ones royalty here tonight with Beattie. I was actually interviewing her dad, Ade, oh, on Breakfast. That made me think about doing The Young Ones as my subject.”

BBC Breakfast airs daily at 6am on BBC One.
