Good Morning Britain caught up with EastEnders legend Tracy-Ann Oberman on Tuesday’s show.
Tracy, 58, joined hosts Susanna Reid and Ed Balls to discuss her role in The Merchant of Venice 1936, but the conversation quickly turned to EastEnders, with the soap’s 40th anniversary just around the corner.
Susanna, 54, quizzed Tracy about the possibility of her iconic character Chrissie Watts making a comeback, and Tracy teased: “I’m [Chrissie’s] out of prison, I [Chrissie] served longer than most murderers!
“The last time you saw me [Chrissie], I mean, spoiler alert, but I did go out. My [Chrissie’s] lover, Jake, picked me up outside the Vic in an open-top Jaguar and off we went into the sunset”, she recalled, reports the Manchester Evening News.
When asked if Chrissie could still be lurking around Walford, Tracy replied: “I like to think at the moment, she’s in the South of France, opening a pub there with Jake, but you never know!”

Ed, 57, pressed her further, asking: “But you don’t rule out a return?” to which Tracy cryptically replied: “Ed, as they say in soap world, you never say never and I’ve been saying never say never for 20 years and I did come back!”
The conversation comes hot on the heels of Tracy’s dramatic return to EastEnders as Chrissie last year, nearly two decades after her initial departure.
Chrissie famously left Walford in December 2005 after she was imprisoned for the murder of husband, Den Watts (Lesley Grantham).
In a bid to protect their freedom, Chrissie alongside Sam Mitchell (Kim Medcalf) and Zoe Slater (Michelle Ryan) buried Den under the floor of The Vic barrel store and Chrissie lived for months under false pretences with Den’s beloved adoptive daughter, Sharon Watts (Letitia Dean), and his son Dennis Rickman (Nigel Harman).

Accomplice Sam was initially held responsible for the crime after she drunkenly dug up Den’s body on Sharon and Dennis’ wedding day, but Chrissie’s actions were soon uncovered when Phil (Steve McFadden) and Grant Mitchell (Ross Kemp) returned to the Square in a bid to free their sister, and Chrissie had been imprisoned ever since until her release last year.
On returning to EastEnders, Tracy said at the time: “Chrissie Watts was such a great character to play – a victim or a villain. She is a real fan favourite so, when Chris Clenshaw asked me to come back and re-visit her and see what has happened in the last 19 years, I jumped at the chance. The scripts are fantastic and I hope the viewers enjoy her as much as I am enjoying playing her again.”
EastEnders continues Monday to Thursday at 7:30pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
