BBC Escape to the Country buyers reel ‘work’ needed to property is ‘step too far’

BBC presenter Chris Bavin journeyed to the West Midlands to assist house hunters Donna and Caroline in their quest for the best properties in the area.

The couple expressed their desire for a slower pace of life as they looked forward to their retirement years. Donna and Caroline had dreams of relocating to the rural countryside, making it their permanent reality.

After visiting Donna’s sister’s home near The Welsh border, the couple became serious about the move. Having met in 2005, customer advisor Caroline and electronics technician Donna moved in together. Years later, they decided to escape the city and enjoy long walks amidst nature’s beauty.

With a generous budget of £600,000, they had a detailed checklist, with one requirement being a large kitchen.

The mystery home they viewed boasted low ceilings, rustic beams, an open fire, and some walls featuring original exposed brickwork, reports the Express.

However, it didn’t suit the guests’ taste, feeling it was too big a project to undertake especially given it came with the shell of an outhouse building.

Donna said: “”The mystery house was really nice from the outside, but once getting inside we found it a bit dark and it kind of closed in.

“I think it was two steps too far, I think the pricing was one step, and then the amount of work you would have to do is the other step, I think that is a step too far for us.”

The property boasted a humble kitchen, a living space, and a study on the ground floor. The bedrooms were distributed across two additional floors.

On the first floor, there were two bedrooms accompanied by a family bathroom. The topmost floor housed the master bedroom along with an extra room.

Chris seemed to miss the mark with the mystery house

After perusing the diverse range of properties, the couple decided they had fallen in love with one place in particular.

Wasting no time, the pair put an offer in and told the BBC host they were waiting to hear whether or not it had been accepted.

Escape to the Country is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
