BBC Escape to the Country opens up on cancer diagnosis – and how big move helped him

Alistair Appleton was taken aback during a recent episode of I Escaped to the Country when a former guest revealed his cancer “never came back” after relocating to Spain.

On Thursday’s (January 16) episode, Alistair caught up with Ian and Simon, a couple who had first graced the property show a decade ago. The pair had been eager to swap the UK for sunnier climes in Spain, and their appearance on the show gave them the impetus to take the plunge.

After sharing clips from the couple’s initial property hunt, Alistair was keen to find out how they were faring in their new Spanish home.

Following a tour of their stunning Spanish villa, Alistair enquired about Simon’s health, particularly in light of his previous cancer diagnosis.

Simon shared: “To be honest with you, this has been the icing on the cake. It’s finished everything off. It’s like I’ve gone through that. I’m now at the top of my peak, and I’m loving every second of it!”

Discussing their move to Spain, he added: “It’s learned me to slow down living in Spain, reports Wales Online.

When Alistair asked: “And the cancer’s never come back? Simon confirmed: “No, no, no, no. That’s all good.”

However, viewers tuning in from the UK found themselves somewhat perplexed by the programme’s international focus.

Audiences drew parallels between the BBC’s I Escaped to the Country and Channel 4’s A Place in the Sun, hopping onto social media platform X to discuss their observations.

One enthusiast commented: “I Escaped to the Country seems to be treading on the toes of A Place in the Sun today by catching up with a couple who moved to Alicante in Spain ten years ago. But apparently #ETTC used to do overseas escapes too, not just the UK.”

Equally surprised, another viewer posted: “SPAIN?! #IEscapedToTheCountry #EscapeToTheCountry has morphed into A Place In The Sun.”

Yet another person shared an alternative perspective on relocating: “The point of moving abroad would be to get away from Brits and family for me.”

I Escaped to the Country airs weekdays at 3pm on BBC One.
