A series of stunning photographs show the extent of snowfall over Dartmoor this week. While there was chaos on roads across Devon, school closures and travel disruption, the countryside was a scene of picturesque winter beauty as it was blanketed in seemingly deep layers of snow.
James Crook, who captured many of the pictures, said it was “bitter but worth it” up on the moors near Ivybridge this morning (Thursday, January 9) following yesterday’s significant snowfall. There was so much of the white stuff that the Met Office issued a rare amber-level weather warning throughout the afternoon and night on Wednesday, indicating a greater likelihood of disruption than it’s more usual yellow warnings.
Local drivers in particular saw major disruption, after road closures on the A38 and A380 near Haldon Hill left some drivers trapped for hours. Schools were not unaffected by snow, with some closed yesterday and others forced to open later in the morning today, as another weather warning for ice was in place until 10.30am.
Yet another weather warning has been issued across all of Devon tomorrow morning, from 3am-11am. The Met Office says: “Patchy rain and hill snow may lead to some ice for a time on Friday morning.”
However, before more disruption predicted for tomorrow, and after last night’s traffic nightmare, enjoy some gorgeous pictures from the moors, featuring the iconic Dartmoor ponies.
