Bin collection changes warning from New Year across England and Wales

Residents across England and Wales are being alerted to changes in bin collection schedules between Christmas and New Year. Whether it’s the usual black bin or green recycling bin collection, cities and councils nationwide will be altering their bin collection dates from Christmas through to the early days of 2025.

Strikes are also set to disrupt services in certain parts of the UK. Several local authorities have already released their revised bin collection dates and have advised residents not to put their bins out too early on incorrect dates.

Buckinghamshire Council announced that collections due on December 30 would take place on December 31, while New Year’s Day collections would be moved to January 3. Collections scheduled for January 2 would then occur on January 4, with delays of one to two days continuing until January 11, reports the Express.

In Leeds, bin collection days have also been postponed by 1-2 days, while in Bolton, bin collections have been delayed by up to six days. In the London Borough of Greenwich, bin collections are being pushed back by one day from your usual collection date from January 1 to January 4.

Refuse collectors in Birmingham are planning to strike in the new year over a pay dispute. Unite members in Birmingham will commence a series of strikes from January 6 and ban overtime from January 2, which the union warns will cause “considerable disruption.”

Unite has stated that 150 workers stand to lose £8,000 a year due to the abolition of a waste recycling and collection officer role.

Unite has announced strike dates for January 6, 14, 22, 30, February 7, 10,18, 26, March 6, 14, 25, and April 2. As bin collections and recycling are devolved issues, each council across England and Wales may have different rules and collection plans over the Christmas and New Year period.

The most reliable way to check is by visiting https://www.gov.uk/rubbish-collection-day and entering your postcode to find out when your bin is due for collection. If your bins have been missed and subsequent collections did not occur, you can also use the website to report missed bin collections.
