Birmingham hidden treasures you might not know were there

Birmingham is a treasure trove of hidden wonders, some in plain sight, others nestled away. But with a bit of exploration, you can uncover a rich tapestry of history and fascination.

Among these is the ancient War Stone in the Jewellery Quarter. This large glacial boulder was carried down from Wales by melting glaciers. Nestled beside the cemetery near the Chamberlain Clock, it’s the namesake of Warstone Lane.

Explore the catacombs at Warstone Lane Cemetery, wander around the two-tiered graveyard, or find the peculiar statue of a man tightrope walking in Ladywood. It’s a statue we often pass near Five Ways, but may not even notice (unless traffic has you at a standstill).

We delve into why Selly Manor is actually situated in the heart of Bournville and not Selly Oak, or muse over the existence of a pump, or lack thereof, in the middle of an island at the end of the Aston Expressway.

All these sights are clearly visible and accessible for those willing to take a closer look. Of course, having a keen interest in such matters, as my children teasingly call me an ‘Anorak’ when I enthral them with these details, certainly helps.
