Birmingham Met Office weather warning kicks in and it will last for 15 hours

A 15-hour weather warning has begun for Birmingham and the wider West Midlands – with a warning to drivers of visibility of less than 100 metres. The yellow fog alert began at 8pm today, Wednesday, January 15, and was due to remain in place until 11am tomorrow, Thursday, January 16 – covering the morning rush hour.

A Met Office map showed the warning in place for a vast swathe of England and Wales, from Devon, Dorset and Hampshire on the south coast up towards the north-east. It said the fog would result in “difficult driving conditions” with public transport delays possible and a chance of delays and cancellations to flights.

It went on: “Areas of fog will continue to develop through Wednesday evening and overnight and, in places, will be dense with visibility below 100 metres. Some of the fog will tend to thin and lift into low cloud across parts of southern England and the southeast Midlands by dawn, but is likely to persist in a corridor from southwest England through the rest of the Midlands to Lincolnshire and Yorkshire until late morning.

“Give yourself the best chance of avoiding delays by checking road conditions if driving, leaving extra journey time, or amending plans if necessary. Make sure you know how to switch on your fog lights, and check they are working before setting off on your journey.

“Bus and train services, as well as flights and ferry travel may also be affected; check for updates from your travel company and follow their advice. Be prepared for weather warnings to change: when a weather warning is issued, the Met Office recommends staying up to date with the weather forecast in your area.”

Cloud and sunny spells are forecast for Birmingham after the warning lifts tomorrow, with a maximum temperature of 7C.
