A 17-year-old boy has been arrested after two teenagers died in a crash in the early hours of New Year’s Day.
Police have renewed their appeal for information after the incident which happened at around 1.20am in the Preston area of East Yorkshire.
A grey Volkswagen Golf was reportedly travelling along Staithes Road, away from Preston, when it was in crash with a black Vauxhall Grandland heading in the opposite direction.
A 16-year-old boy died at the scene and an 18-year-old man suffered life-threatening injuries and was rushed to hospital but died a short while later.
Two other passengers also sustained serious injuries; a 16-year-old girl remains in critical but stable condition and a 17-year-old boy’s condition is listed as serious but stable.
Meanwhile, a 62-year-old man who was in the other car was hospitalized for injuries now deemed not life-threatening and a 34-year-old woman, also in the car, sustained a severe arm injury. Two other passengers escaped with minor injuries.
A Humberside Police spokesperson said: “The driver of the Volkswagen, a teenage boy, aged 17 was arrested yesterday (Wednesday 1 January) on suspicion of two counts of causing death by dangerous driving, reports Hull Live.
“He has been released on bail whilst enquiries continue. The families continue to be supported by specialist trained officers at this extremely difficult time.
“We would appeal for anyone who may have been in the area around the time of the collision, who has dashcam footage or witnessed the collision and has not yet spoken to us, to contact us on our non-emergency number 101 quoting log 60 of 1 January.”
