A woman has been left divided after her pregnant sister asked to use her wedding to host her gender reveal party.
Gender reveal parties have surged in popularity recently, with expectant parents coming up with increasingly elaborate ways to announce whether they’re having a boy or a girl.
One 29-year-old bride-to-be was looking forward to her upcoming nuptials, despite the planning process being “a bit of a circus,” until her younger sister made an outrageous demand. The sister, who is expecting her first child and is an avid fan of gender reveal parties, suggested using the wedding reception as the setting for her own reveal.
She proposed cutting into a cake halfway through the reception to reveal either pink or blue inside. The bride was taken aback by the suggestion, which was casually made during a family dinner.
The bride recounted: “I told her I’d think about it, but honestly, I wasn’t thrilled. I mean, it’s my wedding day, right? I want it to be about me and my fiancé, not about a baby we didn’t make.”
She discussed the issue with her partner “who was also not keen on the idea” and then “politely told her” that she did not wish to include the gender reveal in their “wedding festivities”. Offering an alternative, she suggested her sister have “her own party another day” and offered support by saying she’d be “happy to help plan it or bake the cake or whatever she needed.”
She added: “Well, my sister wasn’t too happy about my decision. She said I was being selfish and that it would be a ‘special family moment.’ My parents are kind of on the fence, but my mum did say something about how it would be a cute memory. Meanwhile, my dad just keeps nodding and staying out of it, which is basically his strategy for everything.”
The bride continued with her dilemma: “Now I’m here, second-guessing myself. Was I being too selfish? I mean, weddings are about family too, right? But also, I kind of want this day to be about my fiancé and me, without a side of gender reveal.”
As the story unfolded, many people chimed in with their viewpoints. A flood of comments slammed the bride’s sister for trying to hijack the day.
One commenter was firm, stating: “Your wedding, your rules. She can have her own special day for the reveal! ” An additional word of advice came from another, who urged: “Agreed and security needs to know that if she shows up with boxes to turn her away.”
And yet another emphatically suggested: “Also tell the photographer and videographer to ignore and not record anything to do with a gender reveal.”

Hire security. The minute they try something, have them hauled out. This is you and your SO day–not hers. They can find out what sex the baby is when it’s born. Gender reveals are f***ing stupid.”
