A Bristol pub is displaying a brand new sign created by an iconic Bristol street artist. The Pipe and Slippers on Cheltenham Road in Montpelier is now the proud owner of an original piece of work by the legendary artist Inkie, which now welcomes pubgoers and locals to the venue.
Taking to Instagram, the Pipe and Slippers team told ‘the story of a pub sign’ and wrote: “Earlier this year we had to swiftly bring down the old boy who has sat up looking out from above the pub for years, as he was in danger of keeling over and seriously injuring someone on the way down… He’s now got a new lease of life chilling on the front of the pub watching the world go by at street level.
“We then commissioned an artist friend of the pub to hand paint us a new one. But this process is not a quick one and can’t be hurried. In the meantime our ironwork was looking a bit sad and lonely with nothing in it. And so to the rescue came our good pal @inkiegraffiti, who knocked us up this absolute beauty of a sign!
“It’s been put into a frame, weather-proofed, and finally today it went up into its new home! And it looks wicked! Feel very privileged to have an Inkie adorning the front of our pub.
“Phase one of the regeneration of the front of the pub finally complete, phase two incoming towards the end of the month. Eyes down for details of that coming soon…”

The sign certainly stands out to those walking by. The ornate iron frame, which features a castle, surrounds the brand new blue, gold and red design, with striking letter work clearly displaying ‘The Pipe and Slippers’. If you look closely enough, you can just make out Inkie’s signature in the bottom right corner.
Taking to the comments section, the street artist himself wrote: “Was an honour to make a mark on such a legendary establishment.” While other locals and pub goers also shared their love for the new sign.
One said: “Smashed the sign game.” While a second commented: “Painted by a legend. Lucky.”
The Pipe & Slippers has been serving the local community and pubgoers from further afield since 2004, boasting ‘great food, real ales, cocktails, roasts and more’, with ‘DJs until late from Thursdays to Sundays’. It’s known to have queues out the door and has been featured among BristolLive’s list of boozers with cosy fires that are a must-visit in the city.
