British Gas urges customers to act for free £347 discount on energy bill

A British Gas engineer has shared how UK households could save £347 a year on energy bills as the price cap rises. A British Gas expert has shared some advice on how Britons could save over £300 on their energy bills as the new price cap begins.

British Gas estimates 64,320 households across the country will need help with their heating and hot water systems. Dinesh Kumar, a British Gas service and repair engineer, has shared top tips as we head deeper into January and beyond Christmas.

The tips include carefully checking your pipes, bleeding your radiators and blocking out the cold as well as arranging furniture and turning off radiators in unused rooms. Optimise your thermostat, prepare your heating for bedtime and embrace smart thermostats.

He explained: “Positioning your sofa directly in front of a radiator may create a cozy spot, but it absorbs the majority of heat that could otherwise warm the rest of the room. Heavy curtains and rugs also play an important role – thicker materials keep heat from escaping through windows and doors. Just remember – when we have it – to let the sun do its job by opening curtains during the day.”

Mr Kumar said: “You can install thermostatic radiator valves so you can control the temperature in each room. Keep them low, around 2-3, when you aren’t in the rooms or out of the house.” He said: “Insulating your pipes with affordable materials from a DIY store can prevent heat loss, helping to avoid expensive repairs.”

Smart technology can deliver substantial savings, with Kumar highlighting that a Hive Thermostat could save up to £172 yearly on heating bills. Give your boiler some TLC, give your boiler some TLC and ceck if you qualify for energy support, too, he says.

For instance, the British Gas Energy Trust provides additional support, offering face-to-face advice and grants of up to £1,700, available even to non-customers. By implementing the aforementioned tips, households could save £347 on their energy bills through the year.
