BRITS have been warned to brace for “icy stretches, severe frost and snow” as the cold snap continues into today.
More travel chaos and disruption is expected throughout the day after heavy snowfall and flooding wreaked havoc on Monday.

The Met Office issued three yellow warnings for snow and ice, which came into force yesterday afternoon.
They continue into today up until 12pm and are in place across large parts of western Scotland, the Scottish Highlands, Northern Ireland, northern England, the Midlands, Wales and south west England.
A fresh yellow warning for snow has now also been extended into Wednesday.
It applies to the entire south coast of England and is in place from 9am to midnight on Wednesday, with as much as 10cm to fall on higher ground.
“Another cold night on the way with a severe frost in areas where there is snow on the ground,” warned the agency.
“Colder than last night in the south with a risk of icy stretches in many areas.”
Met Office Chief Meteorologist, Frank Saunders, said: “Hail, sleet or snow showers are expected to affect parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland, spreading to Wales and parts of northwest England on Monday evening, before moving into part of southwest England, the Midlands and southern England during the early hours of Tuesday.”
The forecaster said rain or hail is likely to be seen on western coasts.
Mr Saunders explained how showers and plummeting temperatures will create “icy stretches will develop” through Monday night, leading to potential travel hell on Tuesday.
“In addition to the ice, we could see snow accumulations of a few cm above 200 metres, with a chance of greater than 5 cm above 200 metres in Wales,” he added.
“The heaviest snow showers may also produce temporary accumulations of 0-2 cm at low levels.”
The meteorologist warned Brits to be “prepared”.
It comes after a major incident was declared yesterday afternoon after dozens of schoolchildren were among 100 people rescued from floodwaters.
Around 50 students became trapped at Edenham Primary School, near Bourne, in Lincolnshire, after snow thawing sparked flooding.
Voluntary group Lincolnshire Community Assistance Team posted on social media: “We have responders on scene at Edenham, supporting other community response groups in the safe evacuation of children from a primary school.”
All the children were safely rescued and taken off site after locals in the community banded together with their vehicles stepped in to help.

A major incident was declared by the Lincolnshire Resilience Forum, which said in a statement on X: “We expect to see conditions worsen overnight as surface water ices over and conditions on both treated and untreated roads will be very icy and pose a risk.”
Meanwhile, a man’s body was pulled from North Yorkshire floodwater, later on Monday evening.
The tragic discovery was made near Intake Lane in Beal, close to Eggborough and Knottingley.
North Yorkshire Police have not been able to identify the man, who has been described as white, in his early 50s to 60s, with short brown hair and stubble.
The man was also pulled from the water wearing brown walking boots, blue denim jeans, a multicoloured knitted jumper and possibly a dark green waterproof coat.
Elsewhere, dramatic footage released also showed a woman being pulled from the vehicle before an emergency alert was issued in Leicestershire and Rutland.
Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service says it’s received more than 200 calls since the morning, and has rescued 100 people so far.
And Brits are still battling travel chaos and school closures, with warnings in place for snow, ice and flooding across the UK.
Heavy snow over the weekend led to major disruption, including to flights from major airports, while cars were left stranded.
The Environment Agency had issued 173 flood warnings, meaning flooding is expected, and 315 alerts, meaning flooding is possible.
And National Resources Wales issued two flood warnings and 22 alerts.
The thawing snow, combined with heavy rain, means fresh hazards for the start of the new week in some areas.
Further warnings for snow, ice and rain remain in place until this afternoon.
Dozens of schools in the north had to close.
Judi Beresford, assistant Chief Fire and Rescue Officer for Leicestershire Fire & Rescue, said “flooding poses a serious risk to lives and property.”
“Our control room and crews are working tirelessly to assist those in need and to keep people safe,” she says.
Snow to continue as temps hit ‘bitterly cold’ -8C with freezing fog and ice amid Status Yellow weather warning
She adds they are working with partners to “reduce the impact of this major incident”, and asks people to avoid flooded routes and floodwater.
It comes after temperatures plummeted to -13C on Sunday night.
The Met Office said on X this morning: “It was the UK’s coldest night of winter so far.
“The temperature fell to minus 13.3°C in Loch Glascarnoch, Scotland.”
Deputy chief forecaster Mike Silverstone said: “The low pressure that brought the snow and heavy rain in the south will move out to the east by Monday.
“This will allow a cold northerly flow to become established again for much of next week.
“This will bring further sleet, snow and hail showers to northern Scotland in particular, but possibly to some other areas, especially near western coasts, with a fair amount of dry and bright weather elsewhere.”

He added: “Temperatures will remain below average, with widespread frost and the threat of ice at times.
“Some areas, especially in the north, may struggle to get above freezing for several days.”
Many local authorities are yet to decide on whether schools will be open, and must assess overnight’s snowfall in order to reach a call.
Families are advised to use the government’s tool – which collates such data – to find out if their school is open. You just need to enter your postcode in the toolbar here.

National Highways said several stretches of A-roads across England are closed because of snow, flooding or crashes. They include:
- The A66 in Cumbria in both directions between the A1M and the M6 because of snow.
- – The A628 Woodhead Pass in South Yorkshire/Derbyshire in both directions between the A616 for Flouch and the A57 for Hollingworth because of flooding.
- – The A1 in Lincolnshire in both directions between the A607 for Grantham and the B1174 for Little Ponton because of flooding.
- – The A49 in Herefordshire in both directions between the A4112 for Stockton and the A44 for Leominster because of flooding.
- – The A38 in Derbyshire northbound from the A50 for Findern to the A5111 for Mickleover because of a crash.
- The A46 in Warwickshire is also closed in both directions between the A452 for Kenilworth and the M40 (junction 15) because of a crash.
- National Highways said “a car is reported to have aquaplaned due to flooding in the area”.
- Aquaplaning is when a driver loses control because a layer of water prevents their tyres from gripping the road.
National Highways said the M5 in Gloucestershire is closed southbound from junction 11A for Gloucester to junction 12 for Quedgeley because of “extensive flooding”.
In an update at 7.05am, it said “contractors are en route to try and deal with the flooding”.
The link road from junction 11A southbound to the A417 southbound at Brockworth interchange was closed after “flooding following heavy rainfall in the area caused drains to become blocked”.
The road was later reopened.
Thousands of journeys on the M25 in Surrey are being delayed as the motorway is closed in the anti-clockwise direction from junction 10 for the A3 to junction eight for Reigate.
National Highways said a lorry has “struck the central reservation and come to rest sideways across the carriageway”.
In a later update, it said the vehicle has been removed and the road surface was “being assessed by a specialist engineer for damages”.
A diversion is in place via A-roads.

The RAC said Monday would be the busiest day of the winter so far for vehicle breakdowns because of severe weather.
RAC spokesman Rod Dennis said: “Today will undoubtedly be the busiest of the winter so far and our patrols are working exceptionally hard rescuing thousands of our members in difficult conditions. Waiting times will be longer as a result.
“The impact of the weather, and the fact many people are using their vehicles for the first time after a festive break, means we’re expecting to be 80% busier than normal.
“At our peak today, we will be dealing with upwards of 20 new breakdowns every minute.
“We urge drivers who know their vehicles are slow to start to book in a mobile mechanic or reliable local garage as soon as possible as it may mean a new battery is required.
“Conditions are especially challenging due to heavy rain and snowmelt causing flooding across the country.”
AIRPORTS
Leeds Bradford Airport warned passengers last night that disruption caused by the bad weather is likely to continue into Monday.
Manchester Airport has reopened both its runways but has warned “some departures and arrivals may still experience delays”.
Posting on X the airport adds: “Please check with your airline for the latest flight information and allow extra time for your journey today.
“We would like to thank our teams for their hard work in getting the runways operational again.”
Liverpool John Lennon Airport reopened its runway yesterday and flights are operating as normal, though the weather is leading to some disruptions.
And Newcastle said on Sunday its runway is fully cleared.
Flooding and trees have also blocked various rail lines.
The CrossCountry and East Midlands Railway is closed between Nottingham and Grantham due to flooding at Elton & Orston.

More flooding has also blocked all lines between Peterborough and Leicester.
National Rail says heavy rain flooding the railway between Worcester Shrub Hill and Hereford has closed some lines leading to delays and cancellations.
A tree has fallen on the Southeastern line between Ramsgate and Canterbury West, with disruption earlier this morning.
Most services on the London Underground are open and running a good service – apart from the Piccadilly Line between Uxbridge and Rayners Lane which has been shut since November due to damage caused by leaf fall.
Flooding has forced the closure of all railway lines between Derby and both Nottingham and East Midlands Parkway.
This is affecting CrossCountry and East Midlands Railway services.
The operators are also disrupted by flooding closing all lines between Peterborough and Leicester.
Southeastern trains are unable to run from Ramsgate or Margate towards London via Canterbury West because of a fallen tree.
Flooding near Hooton, Cheshire, means Merseyrail’s Chester services are suspended while Ellesmere Port services will run as far as Hooton.
