Call the Midwife: Major change to Helen George’s Trixie

The drama set in Poplar, London first aired on the BBC in 2012 and was originally based on the books by Jennifer Worth and her time as a midwife in the East End of London during the 1950s.

Since then, Call the Midwife has reached global audiences and has been renewed until at least 2026.

Ahead of the series premiere, Heidi shared that nurse Trixie Aylward, played by Helen George, will have a new role in London’s Poplar.

Call the Midwife creator hints at a major change for Trixie

At the end of series 13, Trixie faced marriage troubles when her husband, Matthew, played by Olly Rix, moved to New York in hopes of building a business empire.

Worried their relationship would sour, Trixie made the bold decision to share her plans of moving to America to join Matthew.

But now, the boss of Call The Midwife, Heidi has spoken about what change will impact Trixie’s life.

Speaking to Hello!, Heidi said: “Trixie continues to divide her time between her exciting new life in New York and life at Nonnatus House and she becomes instrumental in a new management plan which results in the sustainment of life at Nonnatus House that gives her new management type of responsibilities.”

The latest series of Call the Midwife will be eight episodes altogether and will see Nonnatus House enter the 1970’s.

In the first episode, the nurses must help a pregnant teenage girl whose parents believe the child was made from immaculate conception.

Call the Midwife returns to BBC One on Sunday, January 5 at 8pm.
