A small car park near a park and school in Cheltenham is being closed while a large tree is cut back following recent bad weather. The large poplar at Naunton Park will be pollarded today (Tuesday, January 7) and tomorrow, Wednesday.
Cheltenham Borough Council said the car park at Asquith Road will be closed on Tuesday for the work. The car park is often busy with people using it while they take their dogs for a walk around the park, which is near Naunton Park Primary School in nearby Naunton Lane.
The council said in a series of tweets on X today: “The very large poplar in Naunton Park is being pollarded to keep it safe and healthy in the long term. Due to recent bad weather, work is now being carried out this week (7 & 8 Jan).
“The car park at Asquith Road will be partially closed to allow access for our tree surgeons. The work may look severe but the tree will regrow and will be re-pollarded every 6-8 years, hopefully allowing it to be retained for many more years to come.”
It adds: “We have been managing a similar sized healthy poplar tree in the middle of Burrows playing field for around 30 years.”
