An historic pub in Rochdale that has been empty for years could be transformed into new apartments.
The Reed Hotel, which has stood in the town centre for over a century, served its last pint back in 2017 and has been vacant ever since. What was known locally as ‘The Reed’ is now boarded up and in a run-down state.
But the Grade-II listed building off Hunters Lane could be given a new lease of life after plans to transform it into 10 apartments have been tabled. Brightwise Properties, who put forward the proposal, want to create eight, one-bedroom and two, two-bedroom flats across the building’s four floors.
The pub is just a stone’s throw from the main high street of the town centre, so it is seen by the developer as an ideal location for housing. Given the historic nature of the building, the proposal would see the building’s footprint remain largely unchanged, except for a proposed single-storey rear extension, which will use materials that match the existing structure.
Brightwise Properties say this plan would see a ‘sensitive conversion’ of a listed building, and vowed to maintain its listed status and historic architectural features.
A total of six parking spaces will be provided at the rear of the building, accessed via the existing entrance from Reed Hill – which is just off Hunters Lane.
