Chinese New Year 2025 in Yorkshire and 7 things to do

The Chinese New Year is always a time to celebrate and brightens up the start of February.

We have put together some suggestions of where you can go to celebrate The Year of the Snake in multiple places across Yorkshire. Chinese New Year begins on January 29 this year and marks the change from Year of the Dragon to Year of the Snake.

The Year of the Wood Snake in 2025 is said to bring new opportunities, financial support, and travel luck. However, the combination of wood and fire may also lead to a volatile year with heated conflicts and tensions.

Below are details of the events which are family friendly activities which range from tasting different traditional Chinese food to creating colourful lanterns and watching authentic acrobats from China.

Sheffield’s Lunar New Year Festival 2025

A two-day event which visitors can see Chinese acrobats from Foshan on the main stage at the Peace Gardens along with other entertainment while also enjoying a number of traditional food stalls. There will also be more than 1,000 Chinese lanterns illuminating Sheffield’s streets along with 12 giant zodiac characters each representing one of the 12 signs of the Chinese zodiac with QR codes to find out more about them and the Year of the Snake.

Celebrate the Chinese New Year with a mini disco like no other! This year, we’re ringing in the Year of the Snake with an exciting party filled with music, dancing, games, and a whole lot of of fun.

It is a ‘Pay As You Feel’ entry, this is a unique chance for all to experience the beauty and warmth of Chinese New Year traditions.

Merrion Centre to celebrate Chinese New Year!

Visitors are invited down to the Merrion Centre in Leeds to once again experience various free cultural festivities on Saturday January 25 and Saturday, February 1 2025. There will also be a range of entertainment will rotate every five minutes on the main mall including lion dances, music, cultural workshops, and dazzling showcases of Chinese heritage.
