Christmas present product safety recall over fears of ‘fire, cuts and burns’

A luxury beauty brand has issued a recall for one of its Christmas products amid serious safety concerns. Liberty, the London-based department store, initially sold the ‘Tonka Candle’ as part of its 2024 Beauty Advent Calendar, but now believes it ‘may burn unsafely’.

In a warning posted to its site, the store said: “A very small number of customers have notified us that the flame of the Tonka Candle by Granado may burn unsafely. We take the safety of our customers very seriously and so as a precautionary measure we are asking all customers to discontinue use of the product immediately and safely dispose of it.

“Where we have customer contact details, we will be contacting those customers who have purchased the Liberty Beauty Advent Calendar and are in possession of the Tonka 80g Candle. We kindly ask all customers who purchased the Liberty Beauty Advent Calendar as a gift to immediately share this message with the recipient.”

Granado’s 80g candle was originally housed in drawer three of this year’s advent calendar, designed to be opened on December 3. The potential risk actually stems from the candle’s glass which may ‘crack or shatter while in use’, according to the Government’s Office for Product Safety and Standards.

On December 27, the authority added: “The product presents a risk of fire, cuts and burns as it is possible for the candle glass to crack or shatter while in use. The product does not meet the requirements of the General Product Safety Regulations 2005.”

In light of this, Liberty is now issuing £25 vouchers to anyone who purchased the calendar as a ‘gesture of goodwill’, while urging Granado to investigate the issue. Liberty’s statement continued: “We have urgently requested Granado to investigate and resolve the issue with their product as quickly as possible to ensure the highest standards of quality and safety are met. In the meantime, we are requesting all customers and recipients immediately dispose of the product as a precaution.

“The Liberty Beauty Advent Calendar is a treasured product for many, and we deeply value the trust and enthusiasm our customers place in it. We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused and thank you for your understanding as we take these precautionary measures.”

Granado has been approached for further comment.
