A cleaning guru has shared a top tip for eliminating persistent bad smells from your home using a common kitchen item you’re likely to have on hand.
For those who frequently cook with strong-smelling ingredients such as garlic and fish, or live with pets or someone who exercises regularly, dealing with stubborn odours is a familiar challenge. Even regular emptying of laundry baskets and kitchen bins doesn’t always keep the unpleasant smells at bay.
However, there’s an affordable and widely available kitchen essential that comes highly recommended by experts for its odour-neutralising powers.
Baking powder, a household staple found in most kitchen cupboards, can be purchased from major supermarkets like Asda and Aldi for 65p or Tesco for 57p.

Colby Short, CEO and co-founder of GetAgent, has divulged the optimal way to utilise baking powder to freshen up your home, reports the Express.
“Baking powder is a great, natural deodoriser,” he said. “Sprinkle some onto a soft surface you want to clean, allow it to sit – overnight if possible – and then vacuum it up the next day.”
In addition to this cleaning hack, he also suggests another clever application for baking powder: “Top tip – you can also use baking powder instead of buying scented litter if you have cats.
“It’s less off-putting to them so will keep your furry friend happy, while diminishing the smell inside your home.”

Baking powder is a combination of bicarbonate of soda, commonly known as baking soda, and cream of tartar. Bicarbonate of soda is a favourite among cleaning experts and enthusiasts, with numerous cleaning hacks circulating on social media.
A popular method involves mixing the ingredient with water to form a paste that can tackle stubborn kitchen stains. It’s also useful in the bathroom; you can clean your toilet by adding one cup of baking soda and one cup of white vinegar.
After closing the lid, let it sit for 30 minutes before scrubbing the bowl with a toilet brush and flushing. Additionally, adding a tablespoon of baking soda to liquid laundry detergent can help remove stains and brighten clothes.
