“Let’s get wet!” was the rallying cry of Royal Marines Veteran Tim Crossin, affectionately known as the “Cold Dip Commando.” Despite battling terminal cancer, Tim inspired many with his courage and unwavering positivity.
Though he passed away peacefully in December 2024, his legacy endures as friends, family, and supporters take to the seas in his honour.
Tim, a Marine since the age of 16, devoted his later years to raising awareness and funds for charitable organisations, including RMA – The Royal Marines Charity, Lymphoma Action, Rock 2 Recovery, and the Bowra Foundation. In January 2023, he embarked on a nationwide “Cold Dip” tour, braving icy waters at 31 coastal locations. His determination to face cancer with cheerfulness and resilience left a lasting mark.
Determined to keep his spirit alive, his family and former comrades have rallied to launch the 2025 Cold Dip Commando Challenge, inviting participants across the UK to take a dip in his memory.
Tim’s daughter, Kelly, spoke of her father’s impact: “I’ve never known someone to inspire people how Dad did. He was so courageous no matter what was thrown at him… He joined the Marines at 16 knowing he wanted to serve his country and make a difference, and he did that every single day.”
The initiative has grown into a collective celebration of Crossin’s life, with events planned at locations across the UK. One notable event takes place at Westward Ho! Sea Pool on January 5, where former Royal Marine Jeff Phipps, a close friend of Tim, will lead participants into the water at 11 am shouting Tim’s famous pre-dip battle cry.
Supporters, whether willing to brave the cold or simply cheer from the shore, are invited to join. Participants donning green berets and RMA Charity T-shirts will embrace Tim’s spirit, with optional “budgie smugglers” adding a touch of humour.
The Cold Dip Commando Challenge aims to raise funds for the charities Crossin championed. Donations can be made via JustGiving, with proceeds benefiting RMA, Lymphoma Action, Rock 2 Recovery, and the Bowra Foundation.
“Tim believed in facing challenges with determination, courage, and cheerfulness,” said a family spokesperson. “This is not just a tribute but a continuation of his mission to spread positivity and help others.”
