Coronation Street icon returns after 10 years for Eileen Grimshaw’s exit storyline

Coronation Street will soon welcome back a familiar face as Katy Cavanagh reprises her role as Julie Carp after nearly a 10 year break.

In scenes to air next month, Julie will surprise her sister Eileen Grimshaw ahead of her exit from the ITV soap in the spring. Sue Cleaver recently revealed she has decided to bid farewell to the cobbles after 25 years playing Eileen.

Eileen and her youngest son Todd (Gareth Pierce) will be delighted to see Julie after nine years, but what exactly is her reason for returning to Weatherfield? Also, how will her former partner Brian Packham (Peter Gunn) feel about her arrival?

Soap bosses are remaining tight-lipped about the exact details of Julie’s return and its not known how long she will be staying around for.

Julie first arrived in Weatherfield back in 2008 following a holiday romance with Kirk Sutherland (Andy Whyment).

But when their relationship didn’t work out, Julie then set her sights on Jason Grimshaw (Ryan Thomas) forcing her mum to tell her that she was Eileen’s half sister and Jason’s aunt.

Julie then had a brief fling with Eileen’s then boyfriend Jessie Chadwick (John Thomson) before she found love with newsagent Brian Packham.

The happy couple left the street together in 2015, but their romance didn’t stand the test of time and Brian eventually returned without her.

Speaking about her Corrie return, Katy Cavanagh said: “It is exciting to dust off Julie’s quirky wardrobe again and an absolute joy to step back onto the cobbles. Julie is so much fun, I’ve missed her.”

While the soaps producer teased Julie may be up to something, Kate Brooks added: “We’re delighted to have the inimitable Julie Carp back on the Cobbles.

Brooks added: “Katy has slipped back into Julie’s shoes with such ease that it’s like she’s never been away, and we can’t wait for the audience to watch Julie’s story unfold; a story full of love, laughter and tears.”
