Coronation Street Roy Cropper’s new love interest ‘revealed’ 11 years after Hayley’s death

Coronation Street’s Roy Cropper could be set for a surprise new cobbles romance, according to fans.

The beloved character (David Neilson) made his debut way back in 1995 – rocking up as the neighbour of Deirdre Barlow (Anne Kirkbride) in a block of flats. And it didn’t take him long to quickly become a hit with fans.

Over the course of his 29-year stint on the long-running soap, the café owner has been at the forefront of many major storylines.

Most notably, his marriage to wife Hayley (Julie Hesmondhalgh). The pair got together in the late nineties and became one of TV’s most loved and endured couples.

Roy and Hayley stayed together until Hayley’s tragic death in 2014. Fans will recall how she was diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer – and in a heartbreaking twist, Hayley passed away back with her husband Roy by her side, after drinking a lethal cocktail of drugs.

So it’s fair to say Roy’s time in Weatherfield has not been short of drama. Especially in the past year, as Roy found himself in prison in March 2024 for the murder of Lauren Bolton (Cait Fitton) who fortunately turned out to be alive.

Amid all the drama going down on the cobbles, Roy hasn’t found love again since Hayley’s passing in 2014. However, viewers are now predicting that Roy is set for a surprise new romance on the street – and it’s someone fans know and love.

It was recently announced that Eileen Grimshaw (Sue Cleaver) is leaving the cobbles after 25 years. As part of her exit storyline, Eileen’s sister Julie Carp (Katy Cavanagh) is making her comeback, nine years since she was last seen on the soap.

Now, viewers think Julie and Roy could strike up a romance when she returns. On a Coronation Street Facebook fan page, one person wrote: “Roy needs to get in a new relationship!”

A second agreed and put forward Julie as a suggestion. They wrote: “I always thought Evelyn, but maybe Julie?” A third penned: “That would be sweet! I always liked her.” Another said: “I can see this happening.”

Coronation Street airs Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX
