Matt Baker has finally spoken up about the possibility of a return to The One Show, nearly five years after stepping down from his full-time presenting role.
The beloved Countryfile host, aged 47, shared with Woman’s Weekly that although he hasn’t had any discussions with the BBC, he would be more than willing to step in if they ever needed him.
Matt expressed: “I haven’t had any conversations but, of course, if they needed me, I’d be there for them, I’d help.”
A familiar face on British TV since the early 2000s, starting with Blue Peter, Matt has sat down with countless high-profile individuals over the years. More recently, he’s opened up about the ups and downs of such interviews, including some particularly challenging guests.
In a conversation with the Telegraph, he recounted his most difficult moment on The One Show, which involved Hollywood star Bruce Willis during a 2013 appearance. Willis was there to talk about his film ‘A Good Day to Die Hard’, but seemed unaware that the show was live, assuming it was pre-recorded and edited.
Reflecting on the experience, Matt revealed: “He’d been totally lovely in the green room beforehand and then we went on the show and this weirdness just descended,” reports the Daily Express.
“We were talking about his movie A Good Day to Die Hard and he went off on one about how bad the title was and he just wouldn’t answer the questions.”

An anecdote shared about an interview gone awry included, “It went on and on and when we rolled the first VT, his PR people rushed over and said, ‘Bruce, you do realise this is live.’ He’d thought it would all be edited down. He apologised.”
Notable gaffes have occurred with celebrities and even seasoned presenter Matt, who last year broke Royal protocol during his encounter with King Charles at the Highgrove home in Gloucestershire.
The misstep happened when Matt greeted the King with a handshake and mistakenly touched his elbow, which is against Royal protocol that stipulates touch is only acceptable if there’s a clear invitation.
However, it appears the King wasn’t troubled by the breach at the end of last year.
