‘Danger to life’ warnings as 70mph winds and wall of rain to batter Britain on New Year’s Eve

New Year’s Eve celebrations could be thrown into chaos with Britain to be battered by strong winds of up to 70mph and heavy rain. It will be a wet and windy welcome for 2025 and most revellers will probably want to make sure they are indoors when Big Ben chimes.

Met Office weather warnings are in place across much of the UK on New Year’s Eve. These include amber warnings for rain and snow across much of Scotland.

An amber warning means there is a potential risk to life and likely travel disruption. It could mean chaos for people heading out on the roads and trains to New Year celebrations, with people advised to check ahead for any traffic problems or train cancellations.

On New Year’s Day, there is a yellow warning for snow and ice for northern Scotland, a yellow warning for rain in Wales and north west England and another yellow warning for wind across southern England and parts of the Midlands.

In the West Midlands, heavy rain and winds of up to 50mph are expected as families ring in the new year in what is likely to be a very wet and windy start to 2025. Edinburgh’s outdoor Hogmanay New Year celebrations have been cancelled because of the strong winds.

The Met Office has warned of “a wet and windy spell for many up into the new year”. They said: “A wet night across northern and central England and Wales. Rain, sleet and snow also moving south across Scotland, with a few showers for Northern Ireland. Staying windy.

“A wet and windy New Year’s Day for much of England and Wales. Colder for Northern Ireland and Scotland, with a mix of sunshine and wintry showers.”
