Dermatologist says one type of razor should be avoiding to prevent ingrown hairs

A leading dermatologist has revealed a straightforward technique to tackle ingrown hairs and keep razor bumps away.

It’s all down to personal preference as to whether individuals opt for hairless skin or choose to embrace their body fuzz, and various methods are employed to achieve the desired result.

Many opt for the quick fix of shaving, which, while easy, often results in the unwelcome appearance of inflamed red bumps and the occasional painful ingrown hair.

Dr Aamna Adel, a London-based dermatologist registrar who’s acclaimed in the realms of skincare and haircare, has attracted a significant following on social media, thanks to her insightful advice on popular platform TikTok, addressing common skin issues and hair care concerns.

In her latest video, captioned, ‘Shaving tips EVERY girl needs to know’, Dr Adel is spotted perusing the aisles of a beauty store while detailing the essential products and techniques to help maintain flawless skin after hair removal. Narrating the footage, she said: “Something we will not be taking into 2025 is razor bumps and ingrown hairs.

“So, get out your notebook because these are the non-negotiables that are going to leave you silky smooth and bump free.”

“Say it with me; exfoliation. Exfoliating before and after you shave removes dead skin cells which basically clears the way for the hair to grow out instead of back in on itself…”

The advice didn’t stop there as she elaborated: “Next, wet shave only and honestly, take your pick [when it comes to products]. You can use a shaving foam or a gentle cleanser.”

Dr Adel advised: “Now, when it comes to the type of razor, less is more. Okay, there are some crazy razors out there and we are not looking for a five blade razor; two blades or less is the goal and please, change them after every few uses. Blunt, rusty razors are a recipe for razor bumps and ingrown hairs.”

Many took to the comments section to share their own experiences and ask questions. One person shared: “My recipe for no ingrowns is chlorhexidine soap, the venus satin care gel with their extra smooth razor, and the Naturium glycolic wash x glow getter combo!! And the aveeno tone + texture cream after.”

In response, Dr Adel commented: “Love chlorhexidine aka hibiscrub!” She then added in a subsequent comment: “Hibiscrub wash is also chef’s kiss – wash with it twice a week to reduce ingrown hairs and folliculitis”.

One person said: “Wait, I always thought more razor blades were better,” accompanied by a crying face emoji, while another queried: “Why is less razor blades better?”

Dr Adel explained: “Less irritation and more blades can mean too close of a shave increasing risk of ingrown hairs”. Admirers of Dr Adel’s videos commended her for consistently offering “great advice”.
