Dermatologists warn you should use skincare product all year round – even in winter

Skincare professionals are warning people not to be deceived by the absence of sunshine and warm weather during the winter months, stressing the importance of year-round skin care.

Dermatologists at DERMDOC UK have used TikTok to illustrate this point, showing images of how neglecting to wear sun cream all year round can lead to several problems including wrinkled, red, and blotchy skin.

“Sunscreen is essential in winter because UV rays can still damage your skin even on cloudy or snowy days,” they caution in their video. “Reflection off the snow intensifies UV exposure, increasing the risk of skin damage.”

The dermatologists also recommended three products in the caption of their video, stating: “Invest in your skin’s health, it’s worth it!”

These are:

  • La Roche-Posay Anthelios Melt-in Milk SPF 60: Lightweight, hydrating, and perfect for sensitive skin.
  • EltaMD UV Clear Broad-Spectrum SPF 46: Ideal for acne-prone or sensitive skin with added niacinamide benefits.
  • SkinCeuticals Physical Fusion UV Defense SPF 5

Last month, it was reported that skin cancer rates have hit record highs, with melanoma cases in the UK expected to surpass 20,800 in 2024. Given these statistics, doctors are urging the public to practice sun protection throughout the year, as winter sun exposure poses “unique dangers”.

Echoing sentiments put forth by DERMDOC UK, Dr Emily Alfonsi, the medical director at Shade Skin Cancer Clinic, highlighted a common oversight regarding UV exposure in colder months, asserting: “Many people underestimate the strength of UV rays during the colder months, but winter sun can still cause significant skin damage. Whether you’re skiing in the mountains or taking a frosty morning walk in the UK, UV rays remain a threat.”

Even on overcast days, up to 80% of UV rays penetrate clouds, making daily sun protection essential. Dr Alfonsi advises incorporating a broad-spectrum SPF of at least 30 into your daily skincare routine, regardless of the season. “UV rays don’t take a holiday,” she maintained. “Wearing SPF is just as important on a crisp winter day as it is on a hot summer afternoon.”

Expanding on the necessity for year-long skin care, Dr Alfonsi elaborated: “Sun protection isn’t seasonal – it’s a lifestyle. Whether it’s sunny, snowy, or cloudy, your skin deserves daily care. With melanoma cases rapidly increasing, experts stress that small, consistent habits can save lives. A simple step like wearing SPF every day can significantly reduce your risk of skin cancer.”

The advice is also supported by the NHS’ online guidance which warns: “Sun protection is also important in the winter. Snow reflects up to 80% of the sun’s rays, causing sunburn and damage to uncovered skin. Winter sports in the mountains increase the risk of sunburn because there is less atmosphere at high altitudes to block the sun’s rays.”
