Twenty schools across Devon and Cornwall have embraced sustainability through the inaugural ‘Our Schools, Our World’ programme.
The initiative, spearheaded by Planet & People CIC, is equipping schools to weave environmental stewardship into their leadership, curriculum, and operations.
Held at West Buckland School, the three-day intensive training session brought together educators and leaders eager to drive climate action within their institutions. The programme was enriched by collaboration with Brighton & Hove City Council, whose expertise shaped the sessions to meet local needs.
Jess Carter, environmental engagement lead at Planet & People CIC, said: “We are thrilled with the positive feedback we’ve received. Participants appreciated the interactive workshops and practical strategies they could take back to their schools.”
The initiative provides schools with a comprehensive sustainability roadmap, comprising:
- Leadership Training – Face-to-face sessions empower senior education leaders with tools and strategies to implement sustainability-focused practices.
- Tailored Support – Half-day visits to individual schools help address specific challenges and tailor solutions. Schools have responded with growing enthusiasm for the hands-on guidance.
- Twilight Forums – Half-termly online sessions feature guest speakers and opportunities for schools to share best practices.
- Celebrating Impact – Schools are encouraged to assess their progress and celebrate milestones, fostering ongoing momentum.
- Online Resources – A soon-to-be-launched website will serve as a hub for resources, ensuring accessible support for all participating schools.
Building on this initial success, ‘Our Schools, Our World’ plans to expand in Spring 2025, with recruitment for a second cohort already underway. The programme is also developing an affordable online sustainability package to reach even more schools.
Jess added: “We see this as just the beginning. The framework we’ve developed has the potential to go beyond schools, benefiting businesses and communities too. Together, we can cultivate a brighter, more sustainable future.”
