A classic noughties teen film is set for a modern makeover with Disney+ confirming a pilot for a TV series reboot.
As reported by Variety, writer and executive producer of The Mindy Project, Alina Mankin, will be crafting the script while the Emmy-nominated Liz Phang steps in as the showrunner and also takes an executive producer role for the Holes adaptation.
The production torch is being passed back to Walden Media the original producers of the 2003 silver screen version who have long been championing for a serial take of the story.
Set to reopen the book on Louis Sachar’s much-adored 1998 novel, the reboot’s logline teases: “In this reimagining of the beloved 1998 book from Louis Sachar, a teenage girl is sent to a detention camp where the ruthless Warden forces the campers to dig holes for a mysterious purpose.”

Paying homage to its roots, the revered movie which translated Sachar’s tale to film featured an ensemble cast with household names like Shia LaBeouf inhabiting the lead character Stanley Yelnats.
The film not only cashed in about $71.4 million at the box office against its $17 million budget but also clinched critical acclaim for its nostalgia-driven narrative and loyalty to the source material, reports the Express.
Breaking from tradition, the all-new television series will flip the script, swapping the original male protagonist for a female lead.
The news sparked a flurry of reactions on Reddit, with fans of the original film weighing in on the reboot. One commenter wrote: “Actually a pretty good idea. The movie was fine but you always lose something cramming a book into 90 minutes.”

A fellow user agreed, saying: “Now this is treasure worth digging for, hope they do justice to such an iconic story.”
A third fan chimed in: “Oh wow, this film is my absolute favourite. I think one of the rarer occasions where the movie is better than the book. Hopefully, they do it justice.”
However, not everyone was convinced, with one person joking: “The movie is damn near a perfect adaptation of this book. There is zero reason to do this.”
Another sceptic added: “Another very unnecessary reboot. The movie is a near perfect adaptation of the book.”
