Doctor recommends adding one fruit to diet to boost gut health and stop bloating

Eating plenty of fruit and vegetables can be good for your gut, which is one of the reasons why the NHS recommends getting your five a day in.

They tend to contain fibre, which helps with digestion. And a doctor recently revealed the fruit he recommends to those who are looking to improve their health.

In a video on TikTok, Doctor Karan Rajan advised eating kiwi. He said: “It’s been shown in research studies to be as effective as psyllium husk and prunes to improve the symptoms of bloating and constipation – it’s the humble kiwi. Kiwi is particularly rich in soluble fibre, which promotes softer stools and increases stool frequency without the associated side effects of some laxatives.”

Kiwi contains actinidin, a natural enzyme that helps break down proteins in the stomach. What’s more, the vitamin C in kiwi acts as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent, protecting the gut lining and reducing oxidative damage.

And this isn’t the only food type that Dr Raj recommended. He also listed three more products that can make the world of difference – including coffee.

He said coffee has been linked with a reduced risk of fatty liver disease and the development of liver cirrhosis, thanks to the “double whammy” of soluble fibres and polyphenols, which act as prebiotics that feed good gut bacteria.

The medical professional also recommended adding mixed nuts like almonds, walnuts, and pistachios to your diet, as well as something that is “loved by every GI surgeon, doctor, or dietician” – yoghurt.

He said: “Look for yoghurt containing active cultures like lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium, which can help to add to your good microbial load. Yoghurt has been shown to alleviate symptoms of IBS and can even improve lactose digestion in those who are lactose intolerant.”

Many were appreciative of Dr Raj’s advice – but you can also visit the NHS website if you want more information on digestive health.
