Dog trainer shares 'king of all breeds' that make for brilliant companions

A dog trainer has listed the three breeds he enjoys working with the most.

Will Atherton gushed about the pooches in an informative TikTok video, which has been viewed thousands of times. He said: “If I could only ever choose three breeds to work with or own in the future, these are the one’s I would choose.”

There was one particular type of dog that the expert raved about the most. He deems Labrador retrievers as top dogs in the pack, telling viewers: “If I could only ever choose one breed it would be the Labrador retriever. For me, the king of all dog breeds.”

This won’t come as a surprise to some – as Labradors are one of the most popular dog breeds. They are known for their friendly nature. They generally get along well with children, adults, and other animals, making them great for families.

What’s more, they are loyal and highly intelligent dogs, which makes them easier to train. These qualities make Labradors an excellent choice for many people looking for a loving and reliable pet. However, they require regular exercise and mental stimulation, so potential owners should be prepared to meet their energy needs.

He said: “I absolutely love mastiff breeds. Of all the mastiff breeds, for me I would be torn between the English mastiff and the Cane Corso. If I had to choose, I would probably go Cane Corso for slightly less of an issue around common health issues and slightly increased athleticism. It just lets them enjoy walks more.”

Cane Corsos can be a challenging breed for first-time dog owners due to their size and strength. They can weigh between 90 to 120 pounds or more, and their strength means they must be well-trained to ensure control, especially around strangers or in public settings.

However, when you put the time in, they are known for being protective, loyal and intelligent. Some see them as great guard dogs – just ensure you do your research before adopting one.

Then, it was time for him to sing the praises of German shepherds. Will said they’re “one of the best dog breeds to train and one of the best all-around dog breeds”.

The TikToker added: “They can turn their hand to absolutely anything. Downside for them is they are prone to be quite excessive barkers, so bear this is mind if you’re not ready for that. That could become an issue for you in the future.”

German Shepherds are very intelligent and highly trainable, which is a positive aspect for first-time owners willing to invest time in training. However, they are super energetic require consistent training and mental stimulation to prevent boredom and destructive behaviours.

Before getting any type of dog, you should always weigh up your options and think about what is the right fit for your family. It’s also essential to set aside plenty of time for training. If you don’t have the energy to put into a pet, you should hold off on getting one.
