Police Scotland have now confirmed they are focusing their search efforts on the River Dee – with police helicopters, dogs and a marine unit all deployed to the area.

In a picture released on Sunday, cops can be seen searching the river in freezing conditions, with mounds of ice sitting on top of the water.

The search area goes as far as the he Port of Aberdeen’s South Harbour and towards Duthie Park, the force confirmed on Saturday.

Cops are also working with authorities in Hungary – the twins’ country of origin – to support their relatives back home.

In a statement, their brother József Huszti confirmed: “Dear friends and relatives! Yes, unfortunately, the news is true.”

The sisters, who have been described as white, of slim build, with long, brown hair, left their home on the day of their disappearance, before being captured on CCTV walking along Market Street.

It is then believed the sisters crossed Victoria Bridge at 2.12am before heading in the direction of Aberdeen Boat Club.

In a statement on Saturday, Chief Inspector Darren Bruce, of Police Scotland urged local businesses in the South Esplanade and Menzies Road area to check CCTV footage.

He said: “Extensive inquiries are ongoing to trace Eliza and Henrietta and searches are being carried out in and around the area where they were last seen.

“Searches are ongoing here and we would urge businesses in and around the South Esplanade and Menzies Road area to please review their CCTV footage for early morning on January 7 and contact us if it holds anything that may be relevant to our investigation.

The force added that there were numerous “commercial and industrial units in the area” which were also being searched.

Numerous family members have spoken of their concern for the pair, who don’t usually go out at night.

József told the BBC they had a 40-minute conversation and everything seemed normal.

Eliza and Henrietta’s triplet Edit Huszti said she also spoke to her sisters on New Year’s Eve and they appeared happy.

She added it was out of character for them to be out on the streets in the early hours as they preferred to stay in at night.

The frantic search comes as temperatures plummet to as low as -18.7°C in Scotland – the UK’s coldest January night in 15 years.

Police have asked anyone with information to contact them on 101, quoting incident number 0735 of Tuesday 7 January 2025.
