Donation given to community centre in ‘Birmingham’s most deprived area’

A community centre in one of Birmingham’s most deprived areas has been handed a donation to support it’s work. CAFLO (Community Actions for Local Opportunities) based in Bromford and Hodge Hill, received £1,000 from Platform Housing Group as part of a charity campaign across West Midlands communities.

CAFLO provides spaces for get togethers ranging from meetings, mental wellbeing groups and sports with the goal of improving locals wellbeing. The charity was founded in 2018 offering a meeting place where the local community could feel safe and welcome.

Recent CAFLO projects included Christmas parcels, toys and food donated to the community. It’s all the more necessary for one of the city’s most deprived constituencies, where crime, speeding and littering are rampant.

In summer’s general election, residents slammed the lack of youth investment and perceived inaction from local government. The donation was part of Platform Housing Group’s yearly Christmas Kindness campaign, which supports 18 local specialist organisations, charities, food banks and events across West Midlands communities, totalling £10,250.

Overall the campaign donated £82,135 this year. Tina O’Dell, Manager at the CAFLO Centre, said: “We are immensely grateful to Platform Housing Group for providing us with much needed funding. The area is one of the city’s most deprived with high unemployment.

“Being able to provide worthwhile activities and a warm and safe space to visit is therefore absolutely vital. As a charity we often rely on donations and would like to say a heartfelt thank you to Platform for its support.”

Deborah Jones, Community Engagement Officer at Platform Housing Group explained: “We have been working in partnership with CAFLO for some time now, encouraging our customers to utilise the centre and what it offers.

“Together we aim to tailor services to meet our customers specific needs, developing a place for our customers to have a voice. The centre is an invaluable part of the wider community and plays a vital role in improving the conditions of life for local people.”
