Drivers warned to ‘avoid using’ one common feature to stop car breakdowns in winter

A motoring expert has highlighted the importance of turning off a particular device when parked during the chilly winter months to prevent annoying breakdowns. With the onset of winter, drivers need to be more vigilant due to icy conditions affecting grip and increasing stopping distances, not to mention the necessity of demisting windows before driving off.

Julie Daniels, Motor Insurance Expert at Compare the Market, has pointed out an often overlooked tip for avoiding hazardous situations. She explained: “Cold weather can play havoc with batteries as lower temperatures affect the chemical reactions inside them, making them less efficient.”

“On top of that, during dark winter months, your lights are used more, which means more battery power is consumed. If you’re waiting with the engine off, try to avoid using the stereo, as it could drain the battery and leave you without enough power to re-start the engine.”

Regardless of the vehicle type, its battery is likely to face increased pressure in cold weather, as low temperatures impede chemical reactions.

Therefore, drivers who use stop-start systems or manually turn off their engines while waiting should avoid using battery-draining features like the radio or lights, reports the Express.

Motorists have been warned by Julie, an automotive expert, about the risks of leaving certain car features on that could drain the battery, particularly during the winter months. She highlighted: “The experience of breaking down is much more dangerous in the dark and cold, so keeping an eye on your oil levels is especially important in winter. Drivers should also make sure their windscreen wash contains anti-freeze and they always drive with a sufficient amount.”

Julie further advised: “In wintry conditions, your windscreen can quickly get covered in dirt from road surfaces which can reduce visibility very quickly, so it’s important to be able to wash it effectively to ensure safe driving.”
