Driving instructor shares key road sign that motorists ‘never understand’

How good is your driving knowledge? While you may think you know the roads inside out, it’s near impossible to learn every single regulation.

And one area that people trip up on concerns road signs. In the UK, there are hundreds of different traffic signs, each serving specific regulatory, warning, or informational purposes.

Common ones include speed limits, give way symbols and hazard signs. But a driving instructor has shared a less common sign that motorists tend to get confused about.

Driving coach Annie Winterburn recently took to TikTok to share her knowledge. She said: “You know that it’s warning you – it’s warning you about a steep hill, but is it a steep hill up or is it a steep hill down? Well, read the number 20 and look at the zero.”

Holding up a picture of the sign, she continued: “Is that zero higher up than the two or is it lower down than the two? You can see that the zero is higher up, so that number 20 is going upwards, so it’s warning you about a steep, uphill slope. Practice your road signs because it’s the biggest theory test topic. There are more questions about road signs than any other topic.”

A steep uphill slope road sign warns people that there’s a steep incline ahead on a road. You’ll often find them near sharp turns or curves, following a tricky section of a winding road or in mountainous areas.

So now you know – and Annie’s fans are definitely grateful to have the information. One remarked: “Thank you. This is VERY helpful, as I kept getting confused with this one.” And another agreed: “Really well explained.”
