The UK is experiencing a cold snap with most of the country covered by a yellow or amber weather warning. In response to the weather the DWP has activated Cold Weather Payments for some areas.

Not everybody is entitled to the DWP financial boost, you may get Cold Weather Payments if you’re getting certain benefits or Support for Mortgage Interest. You may be eligible for the Cold Weather Payment if you’re getting any of the following:

  • Pension Credit
  • Income Support
  • Income-based jobseekers allowance (JSA)
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
  • Universal Credit
  • Support for Mortgage Interest

There are specific circumstances for some of those benefits to qualify for the scheme. You can find out more details of the Cold Weather Payment at GOV.UK.

You do not need to apply for the DWP payment because if you are eligible the payment it will be paid into your bank account automatically. After each period of very cold weather in your area a payment of £25 should be made within fourteen working days.

If the average temperature in your area is recorded as, or forecast to be, zero degrees Celsius or below over seven consecutive days, eligible people will receive a Cold Weather Payment. People can receive the £25 payments across seven-day periods between November 1, 2024 and March 21, 2025.

It will be paid into the same bank or building society account as your benefit payments. If you think you should have been paid a Cold Weather Payment but haven’t, the DWP advise telling the Pension Service or Jobcentre Plus. You can check if your postcode is eligible here.
